North Carolina Waterfalls

North Carolina has hundreds of waterfalls, most of them in the mountains, and Transylvania County alone calls itself the Land of Waterfalls. Some you can see from the car. Others take a real hike. Every one here has its height, the walk to reach it, parking and a link to the official page so you can check conditions before you go.

Waterfall safety

  • Stay off the rocks at the top and sides. Wet rock and moss are slick even when they look dry. Most serious waterfall injuries in North Carolina happen when people climb.
  • Never wade or swim above a falls. The current near the edge is stronger than it looks.
  • Watch kids and dogs closely at overlooks and near the water.
  • Go after a good rain for the biggest flow, but stay back from swollen creeks and skip crossings when water is high.
  • Check the official page before you drive: roads like the Blue Ridge Parkway close for weather and repairs.
